“ASSISTANT THIEF”

Previews - (August 4, 2006 )

“ASSISTANT THIEF” HAS BUSY INDEPENDENCE WEEKEND

Patrick Brown’s laugh-a-line comedy “Assistant Thief” which had its World Premier at Centerstage Theatre in New Kingston on July 27, has had audiences rolling in the aisles since.

The Jambiz produced production has a packed schedule for the Independence weekend, with two performances today and tomorrow (Independence Day) at 5pm and 8pm.

Featuring the comedic acting of two of this country’s most renowned and talented actors in the persons of Oliver Samuels and Glen “Titus” Campbell, “garnished” with the comedic writing of this country’s most prolific comedic writer of plays, and “seasoned” with the skillful directing of Trevor Nairne, “Assistant Thief” has had all comedy lovers salivating.

The cast also includes the outstanding new acting sensation Camille Davis, who announced herself most forcefully over the last two years with creditable performances in “Woody’s Last Stand”, “Vibes” and “Class of ‘73”. In fact her portrayal of the ghetto fabulous “Dimples” in Vibes earned her an Actor Boy nomination for best actress. In “Assistant Thief” Davis more than holds her own in the richness of the acting talent on stage, and proves yet again that she has a bright future in the theatre if she continues on the said trajectory. Centerstage Workshop graduate Christopher Hutchinson also stands tall in the impressive talent on display , appearing as a less than competent police officer.

All four actors gel together wonderfully under the expert guidance of veteran director Nairne, and have as a team crafted a truly audience-friendly, laugh-a-line theatrical gem, which has been providing more than adequate exercise for the “funny-bone”. One audience member jokingly complained of a headache during the Intermission break at one of the performances, blaming the incessant laughter for her aching head.

“Assistant Thief” is scheduled to have a limited run at Centerstage before doing the usual tour of rural Jamaica and then jetting off for a limited overseas tour – beginning in Canada and ending in New York, after stops in Florida and the Eastern Caribbean.
