JAMBIZ International and the cast of River Bottom will stage a benefit performance of the play in aid of the restoration of the Ward Theatre, tomorrow at 8.00 pm, at the Centrestage Theatre, Dominica Drive, New Kingston. All proceeds will go to the Ward Theatre Foundation to support the reconstruction effort. "The cast will also donate their time free," said Lenford Salmon, administrative director of JAMBIZ, "most of us started out in theatre and onstage at the Ward, so we felt it was the least we could do, to give back." River Bottom, written by Patrick Brown, opened on Boxing Day to a capacity crowd, and has been playing to packed, appreciative audiences Wednesdays through Sundays at Centrestage. Headliners Directed by Trevor Nairne and Patrick Brown, the play is a musical comedy set in a rural fishing/farming community, with fun for the entire family. Headliners are Oliver Samuels and Glen 'Titus' Campbell, with co-stars Camille Davis, Courtney Wilson, Belinda Reid, Chris Hutchinson and Megan Lewis. This is the third fund-raising event staged in aid of the Ward Theatre since November 11, 2007, when the foundation put on 'Music to Remember' at the Bank of Jamaica Auditorium. That event netted approximately $400,000. On December 9, the media fraternity joined forces to stage a 'Mediathon' under the auspices of the Creative Production and Training Centre the target of J$10 million was not achieved, collection to date is in the region of J$2.6 million. "We encourage all the 'Friends of the Ward' who made pledges on that day to call the theatre to make good their pledge," said Mrs. Ruby Martin, chairman of the Ward Theatre Foundation, "and for those who did not get through on the day, it is not too late to make a commitment." The renowned Ward Theatre, which was donated to the City of Kingston in 1912 by Colonel Ward, is in dire need of renovation, as a result of deterioration over the years. The landmark Georgian structure suffered further damage to its roof and façade during Hurricane Dean last year. |
